ITIN Application Services New Jersey
ITIN application services New Jersey families rely on can make the difference between a smooth filing season and weeks of frustrating delays. If you’re in Voorhees, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Philadelphia PA, or Delaware and you need an ITIN for yourself, a spouse, or a dependent, this checklist will help you prepare the right way from day one.
What an ITIN is (and who typically needs one)
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is issued by the IRS for federal tax purposes to people who need a U.S. taxpayer ID but aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number. It’s common for:
- visa holders and spouses (mixed-status households)
- dependents who must be listed on a U.S. return
- nonresidents with U.S. income or U.S. filing obligations
If you’re claiming a qualifying dependent who isn’t a U.S. citizen or resident, a taxpayer identification number is still required—often meaning an ITIN is needed.
The ITIN application checklist (what to gather)
Use this as your pre-appointment list so your Form W-7 help appointment doesn’t turn into multiple back-and-forths.
1) Confirm the reason you’re applying
The Form W-7 asks for the reason you need an ITIN (for example, filing a U.S. tax return, being claimed as a dependent, etc.). Your reason must match the documents you provide and how the tax return is prepared.
2) Collect acceptable ID documents
The IRS accepts a defined set of supporting documents to prove identity and foreign status. A valid passport can generally serve as a standalone document, or you may need a combination of documents depending on what you provide.
Important: The IRS generally requires original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency (not a regular photocopy).
3) Prepare the tax return package correctly
In many cases, your ITIN application is submitted as a package with your U.S. federal tax return. The IRS provides specific instructions on how to apply and when a return must be included (and when an exception may apply).
If you’re applying for an ITIN for a dependent, the tax return must list that dependent, and certain credits have additional form requirements.
4) Make a plan for dependents (especially children)
Dependents often require extra documentation (for example, proof of relationship and residency), and the submission method matters. The IRS Acceptance Agent program outlines what can and cannot be authenticated for dependents and when originals or certified copies may still need to be sent in.
5) Organize your paperwork so nothing conflicts
Delays frequently happen when details don’t match. Before submitting, double-check that names, dates of birth, and citizenship/foreign status information are consistent across:
- Form W-7
- the supporting documents
- the tax return
Common ITIN mistakes that slow approvals
Here are the issues we see most often in ITIN and nonresident tax return preparation work:
- Sending photocopies instead of originals or certified copies from the issuing agency
- Submitting a W-7 with missing or mismatched document details
- Forgetting to include the ITIN applicant correctly on the return (especially for dependents)
- Applying without a clear filing reason (or using the wrong reason category)
A quick “international tax compliance” note (FBAR/FATCA)
Many ITIN filers are new to U.S. reporting rules. If you become a U.S. person for tax purposes (for example, you meet the residency rules in a later year), you may have foreign account reporting obligations separate from your tax return.
For example, U.S. persons generally must file an FBAR if the aggregate value of foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.
Some taxpayers may also have FATCA-related reporting on Form 8938, which has different thresholds and rules than FBAR.
